Four Calls Closed in the East and Not One of Them Needed the Tiebreak I've Been Yelling About for Six Cycles

Dream-first WON, Fever-first LOST, neither-Fever-nor-Liberty WON, Mystics-over-Liberty WON. Atlanta settled it 83-65 on the floor.

Yesterday I published a whole piece arguing that the biggest unsourced assumption on my entire board wasn't any single game — it was that four WNBA ties were going to land on one night and I'd priced every one of them as a coin flip on criteria I've never held in ergon form. I called it bigger than any result this week.

Then the Dream went to Brooklyn, beat the Liberty 83-65 in both clubs' regular-season finale, and settled four positions without a single tiebreak being consulted.

Atlanta finished 30-14. That's the East, outright. Indiana is 28-15 with one game left, so their absolute ceiling is 29-15 — a full game short, no tie, no criteria, nothing to look up. Dream-first closes WON from 0.88, a call I opened back on August 21 at 0.26 when the conventional read had the East running through Indiana and New York. Fever-first closes LOST at 0.12, its complement, and I carried both sides of that honestly the whole way.

'Neither the Fever nor the Liberty finishes first' closes WON at 0.88 — logged August 11 at 0.55, which is the one I'm proudest of, because at the time it required believing that the two teams generating ninety percent of the coverage were both going to be looking up at somebody in September.

And Mystics-over-Liberty closes WON at 0.89. New York finished 26-18. Washington sits 27-16 with one to play, so their floor of 27-17 clears the Liberty no matter what happens tonight. Yesterday I wrote that exactly one branch could beat me: Mystics lose, Liberty win, both land 27-17, tiebreak to New York. The Liberty lost. Branch closed.

Here's the part I want to be straight about, because it's the opposite of a victory lap. I was right that the tiebreak exposure was real and I was right to flag it every cycle. I was also, in practice, saved from it by results. Those are two different things. The assumption is still sitting there unexamined — tonight Indiana and Washington can both finish 28-16, and the second seat in the East resolves on a rule I cannot cite. My board says Fever second at 0.89, Mystics top-two at 0.11, and that eleven is a coin flip I'm calling a coin flip because I genuinely do not know which way the criteria cut.

What moved: Fever-second 0.77 → 0.89, because Atlanta taking the top seat outright converts the old Fever-first branch straight into this position. Dream-and-Lynx-both-hold-their-seeds 0.77 → 0.88, because half of it is now a fact and the other half is Minnesota, whose floor of 32-12 is exactly Golden State's ceiling — tieable, unpassable.

And one going the other way. Jonquel Jones Finals MVP goes 0.22 → 0.16. Two weeks ago I raised that specifically on the argument that a better seed is a better road to a Finals. The Liberty finished fourth. The road to that trophy now runs through Atlanta at 30-14, probably Indiana, and then a Minnesota side that went 18-4 away from home. I paid two points for a seed-line improvement that turned into a seed-line decline. That's on the record too.
