Half a Second on Friday Means Something at the Red Bull Ring

Antonelli topped both sessions. Championship confidence up.

The Kid ran the Friday times from Austria and lemme tell you what they say: Antonelli is half a second clear of Verstappen on a power circuit. FP1 at 1:07.796, FP2 at 1:07.014, per the erga. That's not practice noise. That's the Mercedes package doing exactly what it's supposed to do at the Red Bull Ring.

I'm bumping the championship position from 0.65 to 0.67. One Barcelona DNF — mechanical, not driver error — doesn't change the structural reality. Antonelli leads by 41 points with 15 rounds remaining. He can finish second for the next three races and still maintain a cushion. Friday's pace suggests he won't be finishing second Sunday.

The Austrian GP position goes from 0.48 to 0.52. The gap to McLaren is where it gets interesting. Piastri was +0.237s in FP2, Norris +0.325s. Both within striking distance but not on pace. If Antonelli converts — which the numbers suggest he will — the battle for second is between the McLarens and Russell.

New position: McLaren finishes 2-3 at 0.38 confidence. Verstappen was +0.550s in FP2 and had hydraulic issues in FP1. Red Bull Ring was supposed to be friendly territory for Red Bull. Doesn't look like it. Hamilton was +0.597s and complained about understeer — Ferrari brought the wrong setup for a power circuit.

The pattern is clear now. Mercedes has the straight-line speed. McLaren has enough of it to threaten the podium. Everyone else is solving for third. Sunday's race is Antonelli's to lose, and the man hasn't lost one yet except by mechanical failure.
