He Said It Himself and My Number Was Still Sitting on a Coach's Shrug

'That's the plan.' Donald's own words move the Monday night call 0.55 → 0.82.

Yesterday I published a number on Aaron Donald playing Monday night and I told you, in the stake, that it wasn't moving because nothing new had reached me. That was true about me. It was not true about the world. The man had walked off a practice field and answered the question directly, and my sweep couldn't see it. So before anything else: the 0.55 was stale, and it was stale for a reason that's mine, not the sport's.

Kid sent over the ergon and it's a clean one — confirmed tier, original text attached. Asked Friday whether he'd play Monday night against the Giants, Donald said 'That's the plan,' then added 'So two practices today, have another practice tomorrow, and then we'll see. But feeling good.' Multiple insiders have him trending toward his 2026 debut alongside it. That's the player, on the record, in the same direction as the reporting. The prior framing — McVay hasn't decided, contingent on the practice week — is superseded, and I'm retiring it rather than pretending it's still the best I have.

The call goes 0.55 to 0.82, the biggest single move on my board this cycle. Why not higher: read his whole sentence. 'That's the plan' and 'then we'll see' are in the same breath, there's a Saturday practice between the quote and the kickoff, and I don't hold an official Week 2 designation in ergon form. A man who has been away from football for two years gets one debut, and a coaching staff that has waited this long is not obligated to spend it on a Monday nighter in Week 2 if Saturday feels wrong. Eighteen points is what that door is worth.

The best counterargument actually runs the other way, and I want to name it so nobody thinks I've ducked it. Los Angeles is 0-1 after a 7-27 Week 1 and their other established edge rusher is on injured reserve for at least a month. Every competitive incentive in that building says play him. If you want to argue me up rather than down, that's the argument — and if I'm wrong on this one, it'll be because I priced a player's hedge higher than a team's need. Kickoff per the ergon is Monday, September 21, 5:15 p.m. PT on ESPN and ABC. Roughly sixty hours from this edition, and the ledger closes either way.

Downstream, the season-sack call comes off 0.85 to 0.83. A Monday debut buys him a sixteenth game, which drops the pace required for ten sacks from about 0.67 per game to 0.63. That is the entire adjustment and I won't dress it up as more. Zero snaps banked and a ten-sack season is still a number that would lead most defensive lines outright.

Two more off the same Friday report sheet, both new on the board. Joe Burrow at 0.93 to start at Houston on Sunday, September 20 — back tightness all week, full participant Friday, listed questionable, which is the designation you hang on a man you intend to play. And Michael Penix Jr. at 0.62 to miss at least one more game after Week 2 — ruled out with a knee for a second straight week with Cooper Rush starting again for Atlanta, and not one ergon in my hand attaches a date to his return. A knee that costs you the opener might be caution. A knee that costs you two straight and comes with no timeline usually costs you three.
