Houston Is Exactly .500 and Leading a Division. Give That About a Week.

The Los Angeles Angels — 50-76, fourth in the AL West, thirteen games out of a division they've been out of since May — walked into that game and won it 3-1 per MLB-RESULT-824154. Same night, Texas shut out Washington 5-0 per MLB-RESULT-822859. Houston went to bed with a one-game lead in a division they woke up leading by two.

I'm cutting the Astros' AL West call from 0.56 to 0.48. Below even for the first time since I logged it. And I'm logging a companion: the AL West champion finishes with fewer than 85 wins, at 0.82.

Here's the board. Houston is 63-63 per MLB-STANDINGS-20260819-117 — the only division leader in baseball that isn't above .500 — on a three-game skid, 31-32 at home and 32-31 on the road. Texas is 62-64 per MLB-STANDINGS-20260819-140. Seattle is 59-67 and four back per MLB-STANDINGS-20260819-136, which is a bad record and a live one at the same time. My math says 36 games left for the top two. Four days ago I wrote on this position that a lead which doesn't grow is a lead that decays. It has stopped not-growing.

Now the best argument against me, which is a real one. Texas cannot travel. They're 33-27 at home and 29-37 away — by my math that's .550 against .439, a gap of roughly 111 points — and September is where road trips live. Houston, whatever else is wrong with them, is the most balanced club in the division: one game under at home, one over on the road, no structural leak you can point at. If you told me one of these two clubs was going to fall apart in the last six weeks, the record says it's the Rangers.

But a leader at exactly .500 has no margin for the thing that just happened to them. Losing 3-1 to a club fourteen games under is not a fluke you shrug off when your cushion is one game — it's a third of your buffer, gone in three hours, to a team with nothing to play for. Houston doesn't have a stretch of dominance banked anywhere on the ledger to lean on. They have 63 wins and 63 losses, which is the definition of a club that has never once separated itself from anybody.

The Kid pulled the requirement math and it's ugly across the board: Houston needs 22-14 from here to reach 85 wins. Texas needs 23-13. Seattle needs 26-10. Nobody in this division has played .611 baseball for six straight weeks at any point in 2026. Somebody is going to win the AL West with a number in the low eighties and a home playoff game they didn't earn, and right now I couldn't tell you which of the two it is. That's the whole reason the call came off the top side of even.
