Houston Leads the AL West With a Losing Record at Home. Texas Has the Best Home Record in It.

Lead down to 1.0. New call on Texas at 0.39; Houston cut to 0.50.

Diddja look at how Houston is leading the AL West. Not that they're leading it — everybody knows that, it's on the crawl. How. Astros 70-69: thirty-four and thirty-six at Minute Maid, thirty-six and thirty-three everywhere else, per MLB-STANDINGS-20260902-117. That reconciles — 34 plus 36 is 70, 36 plus 33 is 69 — and it means the division leader's cushion is built entirely on the road. The half that moves. The half that's supposed to be the hard one.

Now look at the club one game behind them. Texas 69-70, per MLB-STANDINGS-20260902-140: thirty-eight and twenty-nine at home, best home record in the division by a distance, and thirty-one and forty-one on the road, worst in it. Two clubs a game apart, built out of exactly opposite materials.

Last night squeezed it. Chicago beat Houston 5-1 per MLB-RESULT-824148 and Texas beat the Athletics 8-5 for a third straight per MLB-RESULT-822854. The lead went 2.0 to 1.0 in one evening, and the Houston loss happened to land in the home column, which matters for reasons I'll get to.

So I'm logging a new position: Texas Rangers win the 2026 AL West, at 0.39. Houston comes down from 0.54 to 0.50. Board reads Houston 0.50, Texas 0.39, Seattle 0.07 at 65-74, field 0.04 — sums to 1.00, which is how I keep myself honest. And 0.39 rather than 0.45 because Texas's road half is genuinely bad, and the thing I don't have is the one thing that would settle it: no remaining-schedule ergon in this sweep. Twenty-three games apiece and I can't see how many of them are at home for either club. That's the hole in the call and I'd rather name it than dress it.

The companion calls all move the same direction. Houston under .500 at home goes 0.68 to 0.71 — the home ledger dropped to 34-36, so my math says seventy home dates played of eighty-one, eleven left, and they'd need seven of eleven just to finish break-even in their own building. Houston under .500 the rest of the way goes 0.50 to 0.53; the tracker's last attached window state on that one reads 5-2, verdict open, and that's the count of record — I'm not recounting games by hand, I've been burned doing that before. And the AL West champion finishing under 85 wins goes to 0.99: Houston needs 15 of 23, Texas 16 of 23, from two clubs currently separated by two total games from .500.

Here's the seam, and it's the whole reason I'm writing this instead of quietly nudging a number. The market — and the crawl, and the room — prices Houston as the favourite because Houston is in front. But being in front by one game while playing sub-.500 baseball at home, against the division's best home team, isn't a favourite's position. It's a coin flip with the tiebreaker held by whoever has more home dates left, and neither of us can see that yet. Watch the Rangers' home stands. If Texas gets a long one in mid-September, my 0.39 is going to look timid.
