I Docked the Lynx for Losing Game 1 and Forgot to Multiply. That Was a Sixteen-Point Error.

Minnesota faces elimination Tuesday, September 29 in Brooklyn. 0.76 → 0.92, and the Jones Finals MVP call takes a bigger cut than that.

Yesterday I logged the Lynx not winning the title at 0.76 and wrote this sentence: 'A top seed in a short bracket is maybe a one-in-three proposition before you dock it for dropping the opener.' Read it again. That's a man who did the first step of the arithmetic and then eyeballed the rest. Once a top seed is down 0-1 in a best-of-three, you don't dock the title number — you multiply it through three separate rounds, and the survival branch is the one carrying all the risk.

So here's the real version. Minnesota must win Tuesday, September 29 at Barclays Center or be eliminated outright; win it and there's a decisive Game 3 back in Minneapolis, per COLLECTOR-wnba-20260929-003. Call the Brooklyn game near even and Game 3 at home a lean, and survival comes out around a third. Then a semifinal. Then a final. Roughly seven or eight percent to win the whole thing, which puts the position at 0.92 or 0.93. I'm taking it to 0.92 and holding a point back, and I'll say what for in a second.

I'm also logging the cleaner version new: Minnesota eliminated in the first round, 0.66, resolving in days rather than weeks. Thirty-three and eleven, best record in the league, and the briefing notes no No. 1 seed has lost to a No. 8 since the league dropped early-round byes after 2021. That's the history. The bracket doesn't care about history.

Now, the point I'm holding back, and it's the strangest number on the Lynx's page. Minnesota went 18-4 on the road this season and 15-7 at home, per WNBA-STANDINGS-20260929-lynx. Eighteen and four. That is the best road record in the league by a distance, and it belongs to a team that just lost its home opener of the postseason by sixteen. Which means the elimination game — the one everybody assumes is the hardest possible assignment — is being played in the exact environment where this team has been at its best all year. If you want a reason the Lynx survive tonight, it isn't the seed and it isn't the regular-season record. It's that 18-4.

What beat them in Game 1 was a performance the league has literally never seen. Breanna Stewart went for 34 points, 12 rebounds, 6 assists, 2 steals in the 91-75 win — the first 30-point, 10-rebound, 5-assist, 2-steal game in WNBA playoff history per COLLECTOR-wnba-20260929-002. You can't plan around that and you probably can't expect it twice. That's the honest read on Game 2: the Liberty played their ceiling and the Lynx played in the wrong building for them.

Stewart's night also forces a correction I like less. I have Jonquel Jones at Finals MVP on the board and yesterday I nudged it up two points to 0.16, reasoning that New York winning Game 1 improves the team branch. That part's true. What I didn't do was re-run the product. The Liberty are the eighth club by record, up one game — call their title odds around eleven percent — and the probability Jones is the one holding that trophy has to come down materially now that her teammate just put up the single best playoff line in league history. Eleven percent times something like thirty is seven, not sixteen. The position goes to 0.07. Nine points off, and the mistake was mine and not the data's: I moved a compound number by pricing one of its two factors.

The West-champion call barely moves — 0.55 to 0.54 — and I want to flag that a stationary number here is not a stable situation. The derived bracket puts Minnesota plus three Eastern clubs in one half and three Western clubs plus Indiana in the other. If the Lynx go out tonight, the entire top half becomes Eastern and a West champion has to come out of the Valkyries/Aces/Wings side alone. That's a real cut, and it's being cancelled almost exactly by how strong that remaining side is. Two live effects pulling against each other is not the same thing as nothing happening.

Tuesday, September 29, Barclays Center. Best record in the league, one loss from over, in the building where they've been at their best. That's the game.
