I Gave Back Four Points on 'He Remains Fit.' The Doctors Just Ordered Bed Rest.

On September 3 I cut this call from 0.80 to 0.76 and told you exactly why. Two things had softened. Pakistan's own team media manager said Babar Azam remained fit despite the fever. And the Imam-ul-Haq discipline reporting was internally contradictory — one outlet had him facing up to two years, another had him saved from a ban, and the Kid correctly wrote an ergon for neither.

Both of those legs are gone this morning.

On Babar: doctors have advised bed rest for a couple of days and told him to avoid the gym and outdoor practice while he recovers, with Salman Ali Agha kept on standby as stand-in captain. That is a materially worse fact than 'remains fit.' A captain who is under medical supervision and told not to practise outdoors, three days out from the first ball of a Test, is not a man building rhythm.

On Imam: the contradiction resolved, and it resolved in one direction. Every outlet the Kid surveyed this sweep agrees he faces a possible one-to-two-year ban with the PCB investigating the circumstances of the Lord's calf injury. Nobody is running the 'saved from a ban' version anymore. Reported tier, and I'm naming that — but consistent reported tier is a different animal from two outlets shouting past each other, and the softening rationale I used on Tuesday no longer exists.

Around all that, the structural wreckage from last week stands unretracted: seven players sent home, the red-ball coach sacked, five uncapped replacements in the party. England, meanwhile, have named a settled fifteen with Joe Root captaining, and they lead the series 2-0 heading into Edgbaston, which starts Wednesday, September 9.

So: 0.76 back up to 0.83. Not higher, and this is where the Kid's framing earned its keep. A touring side that has jettisoned its coach, a senior batter and five others, with its captain in bed three days out, does not produce a normal distribution of outcomes.
