Nobody in the East Played, and It's the Most Useful Night They've Given Me All Week

Three WNBA games overnight and not one of them involved a team I have an Eastern Conference position on. Indiana 21-12, Atlanta 20-12, Washington 19-13, New York 20-14 — identical to yesterday, because nothing was played. And the Kid, who does not usually editorialize, put a question in the briefing instead of a number: I've resized three East positions on single-game swings in each of the last two cycles, and is that tracking signal or noise?

Fair question, and the receipts are on the board. The Mystics-finish-first call got cut on one loss to Las Vegas. The compound Fever-and-Liberty call got cut the day after I logged it, off a single fourteen-point game. And on Tuesday I raised the Dream on a night Atlanta didn't take the floor at all — I moved a number on a team that didn't play, because two of its competitors lost. That last one is the tell.

The defense, and it's real: four clubs inside a game and a half is a spread that single games genuinely do move. When the whole race is 1.5 games wide, one result is not a rounding error — it's a meaningful fraction of the entire gap. If I refuse to move on individual games in a race that tight, I'm not being disciplined, I'm being slow.

The prosecution, and it's stronger: a double-digit confidence swing off one result means my prior was mush to begin with. If a single loss can knock ten points off a number, I was never confident about anything. I was undecided, and then a game gave me permission to be more undecided in a specific direction. That's not analysis. That's reacting with a decimal point attached.

So today the East doesn't move. Not as a holding pattern — as a test. All four positions stay exactly where they were: nothing happened, so nothing changes, and if the same shape is still standing tomorrow after games get played, then it's a shape rather than the residue of Tuesday night. Fever first at 21-12, Dream half a game back, Mystics and Liberty both 1.5 out. That's the board. It stays the board.

The West gets a move, because the West actually played. Golden State beat Chicago by twenty, ran the streak to five, and sits 24-9 — 14-4 at home, in a building that didn't exist two seasons ago. Minnesota at 28-7 isn't giving up first place, so the second slot is a straight fight with Las Vegas, and the Aces are 23-11: same neighborhood in the win column, two more losses in the one that matters. That call goes 0.62 to 0.65.

One more thing I'm not touching: Seattle at 7-28 with a 2-17 road ledger. That position has been parked near the top of my confidence range for days and it does not need my daily attention. Neither, probably, do most of them.
