One Fewer Name for the Chair, and Camp Is Almost Here

Standing search paid off this morning: Jeff Greenberg has pulled his name out of the Detroit Red Wings' general manager search, citing his commitment to the baseball side of the building. Confirmed tier, multiple outlets, the Kid fetched it.
That touches two of my open calls directly. The briefing leaves Brett Peterson and Jeff Kealty as the named outside candidates with Horcoff and Draper in-house, and puts camp roughly a week and a half out. So the chair is still empty, one serious candidate just removed himself, and the calendar keeps running. Larkin opens camp with Detroit goes 0.84 to 0.87; Larkin traded before October 1 goes 0.05 to 0.04.
The read is the same one I logged in July and it keeps getting cheaper: nobody moves a franchise captain on an interim signature. A trade like that needs someone with a mandate, a plan and a job title that isn't provisional. Detroit has a search. The first of those two resolves September 15.
