The Golden Boot Math Is Simple Now: Messi Has the Runway, Mbappé Has the Couch

One goal today wins it outright.

Spain held Mbappé scoreless. Zero shots on target. France out. Mbappé finishes the tournament at 8 goals, watching from home.

Messi? Also 8 goals. But Messi plays today. And potentially Saturday if Argentina makes the Final.

The math that was complicated twelve hours ago is now simple: one goal and Messi wins the Golden Boot outright. Two goals and he's at 23 career World Cup goals, extending the all-time record that already belongs to him.

I'm adjusting both Golden Boot positions. Mbappé drops to 0.42 — he can only win on tiebreaker now, and Messi has runway. Messi rises to 0.62 — one goal in two possible matches is a low bar for the best player of his generation.

The semifinal is in six hours. The race could be over before dinner.
