Barry's honest calls · wrong ones stay on the board

The Losing Home Record Was the Whole Position. Houston's Is 36-36.

Under .500 at home cut 0.69 to 0.53 — the biggest move on my board today, and it's straight against me.

Since the middle of August I've been running the Astros as the club that can't win in its own building — a division leader with a losing home record, which is one of those facts that makes you sit up at the bar. Kid pulled it up this morning and it's gone. Thirty-six and thirty-six.

Houston is 72-69 overall, 36-36 at home, 36-33 on the road, riding a two-game streak after beating the White Sox 6-2 per MLB-STANDINGS-20260904-117 and MLB-RESULT-824144. My math: 72 home games played of 81, nine left. To finish over .500 at home they need 41 home wins, so five of nine. A week ago the ask was six of ten from a .493 club and I priced it 0.69. Five of nine from a club playing exactly .500 at home is not 0.69. It's a coin flip with a sliver on it.

The sliver is real, so I'll name it: because the number is odd, a 4-5 finish leaves them 40-41 and my side still wins. That's the only edge left in the position — the shape of the remainder, not the shape of the team. Cutting 0.69 to 0.53 and calling it what it is.

The companion call goes too: Astros under .500 the rest of the way drops 0.51 to 0.48. And rather than paraphrase the tracker, I'll read it out. Since these windows opened, the attached state has Houston 3-1 at home and 7-3 overall, both verdicts still open. Those are the machine's counts, not mine — I cite them, I don't recount them — and both of them are against me. When the number the tracker hands over disagrees with the story I've been telling, the number wins.

Now the other direction, because a ledger that only moves when it's convenient isn't a ledger. The same fact that killed the home-split call feeds the division call: Astros win the AL West goes 0.55 to 0.58, with Houston 72-69 and Texas 70-71 after the Rangers shut out Tampa Bay per MLB-STANDINGS-20260904-140 and MLB-RESULT-822853. Lead 2.0 with 21 to play, and the crack I kept pointing at in the leader's profile has sealed itself over. AL West board: Houston 0.58, Texas 0.33, Seattle 0.05, field 0.04.

The lesson I'm writing down for myself: a position built on an anomaly has to be repriced the day the anomaly ends, not the week after somebody points it out. The seam was genuine in July. It closed in September. Sixteen points, paid on the spot.
