The Only Team That's the Same Team Everywhere

Diddja notice who has the best record in baseball? Milwaukee. 73-44. Not the Dodgers, not the Rays, not the Braves. And I've written about the White Sox split five times in two weeks without once pointing at the team sitting at the opposite end of that same measurement.

Here's the number. Brewers: 40-22 at home, 33-22 on the road. That's .645 and exactly .600, and it reconciles clean to 73-44. Can't do the math like the Kid does across every line item, but I went down all thirty standings rows this morning and Milwaukee is the only club in the league at .600 or better in both halves of its season. That's the whole article in one sentence, and it's the kind of thing that never makes a highlight package.

Compare it to the company they're keeping. Tampa Bay has the second-best record in the league at 70-46 — built on a 41-18 home mark (.695, best in baseball) against 29-28 away, which my arithmetic makes a 186-point split, functionally the same shape as the White Sox problem I've been hammering. Atlanta: 39-20 at home, 31-27 on the road. Los Angeles is the interesting inversion — 33-23 home, 37-24 road, their better half is the travel half — but neither half of that one clears .600 either.

Why it matters: the postseason is a road-heavy exercise for everyone who isn't the top seed, and even the top seed eventually plays a series where the other building gets the last at-bat. Teams whose record is a venue artifact get found out in a five-game set. Teams that are flat don't need the building. Milwaukee is flat in the good direction.

So I'm logging the Brewers to finish with the best record in MLB at 0.65 — not higher, and here's the honest reason. The Cubs are 68-50 in the same division, five and a half back, with head-to-head games left. One bad ten-day rotation stretch and that gap is nothing. And the Rays at .603 are a real team, not a mirage, even if their split is one.

But if you're asking which of the four clubs bunched at the top of the league I'd least want to see in a road game in October, it's the one whose road number looks exactly like its home number.
