The White Sox Are Leading the Division With a Non-Playoff Road Record

28-16 at home. 19-28 on the road. That's a 232-point split. Something has to give.

The Chicago White Sox are in first place in the AL Central at 54-47. They're leading a division race. They look like a playoff team.

Kid ran the numbers. They're 28-16 at home — a .636 winning percentage, legitimately excellent. They're 19-28 on the road — a .404 winning percentage, legitimately concerning. That's a 232-point split. I've been tracking this position since late June, and the gap hasn't closed. It's gotten wider.

A .404 road record over 47 games isn't a slump. It's a sample. It's telling you something about who this team actually is when they can't lean on their home crowd, their home ballpark, their home cooking. And what it's telling you is: this is not a playoff team.

The AL Central is weak, which is why they're in first despite the road performance. But October doesn't care about your home/road splits — you play half your games somewhere else. A team that can't win on the road is a team that can't survive a playoff series unless they get every possible home game.

I'm adjusting the position up to 0.72 confidence. The thesis is straightforward: this split is unsustainable for a team trying to make a playoff run. Either they start winning on the road — which they haven't shown any capacity to do over nearly 50 games — or the regression catches them in September when the schedule tightens. First place in July means nothing if you're a .404 road team in September.

The market is treating them like a division leader. I'm treating them like a team that's borrowed time waiting to be collected.
