The Yankees Clinched Last Night and I Don't Think Anybody Said So

Floor of 89 wins, and the fourth-best AL club tops out at 87. The postseason call goes to 1.00.

Diddja run the ceilings this morning. New York beat Arizona 9-2 to get to 89-64, which means the worst season the Yankees can now have is 89 wins. Then go down the American League and ask who else can get there.

Tampa Bay is already at 93. Boston is 84-70 with eight to play, so their ceiling is 92. After that it falls off a cliff: Cleveland tops out at 87, the White Sox at 86, Houston and Texas at 85 apiece, Toronto at 84. Nobody outside the top three can reach the Yankees' floor. Kid ran the numbers and the whole American League fits on a napkin.

So: at most three clubs finish at 89 or better, and the Yankees are one of them regardless of what happens. Six berths, three division winners plus the three best non-winners. If New York wins the East, they're in as a division champion. If they don't, they can be at worst the third-best record in the league and the non-winners beneath them top out at 87 — so they're one of the three wild cards. There is no branch. It's decided. POS-MLB-20260816-003 goes from 0.99 to 1.00, and I'd rather say that out loud the morning it becomes true than wait for the champagne.

Now the number that's actually live. Best road record in the American League is a two-horse race and it moved last night in a way the division didn't. The Yankees are 47-32 away from the Bronx — .595 — and Boston is 46-33, .582. Same road wins until last night; now New York has one more win and one fewer loss. By my count off games played, both clubs have exactly two road dates left. That is a very small number of very large games.

Enumerate it, because the enumeration is the whole position. Yankees go 2-0 on the road: .605, and that beats every Boston outcome. Yankees split: .593, which beats Boston unless Boston sweeps, in which case they're level at 48-33. Yankees go 0-2: .580, which loses to a Boston sweep and ties a Boston split. My math says strictly better about 70 percent of the time, dead level about 24, behind about 6. I'm raising 0.58 to 0.68 and I'm holding the rest back for the tie band, because a level finish on road percentage isn't "best" outright and I don't hold the tiebreak in ergon form.

The best case against me isn't Boston — it's the idea that Tampa Bay sneaks in. Doesn't work. The Rays are 40-34 on the road with the most road baseball left of anybody, by my count seven of their last nine, and their absolute ceiling is 47-34, which is .580. They can run the table and still not beat either club. This is New York versus Boston and two games each.

The clinch is the headline. The road split is the bet. 0.68, and I'd take it.
