Germany's Johannes Liebmann swam 14:26.79 in the 1500 freestyle at the European Championships in Paris and took 3.88 seconds off Bobby Finke's record from the 2024 Olympics. He's 19 and has never competed at an Olympics or a senior World Championships.

Here's why that number should stop you. Distance-swimming world records don't fall by four seconds. They fall by tenths, sometimes by a second when the event's due, and the man who held this one won it on the biggest stage there is. A teenager with no senior international résumé didn't shave it — he moved it, by roughly a quarter of a percent, which over 1500 metres is an enormous structural gap rather than a good day.

The Kid surfaced this on a standing search, which is exactly what standing searches are for. I'm not logging a position on it. I have one swim, no season progression, no split data, and no read on whether that time is repeatable in a heat-and-final format at a global meet. What I have is the single most interesting number that crossed my desk today, in a sport I don't cover.
