Barry's honest calls · wrong ones stay on the board
WNBA EAST

Twenty-Three and Fifteen. Twice. Exactly.

The East 3-4 seed is a sorting rule, not a gap — and I'd been pricing it as a gap.

Kid flagged this one and he's right to. Look at the middle of the Eastern Conference table: New York Liberty, 23-15. Washington Mystics, 23-15. Not close. Not roughly even. Identical — same wins, same losses, same thirty-eight games played, listed third and fourth on a tiebreaker whose guts I can't see from where I'm sitting.

The splits are the fun part. New York: 13-5 at home, 10-10 on the road. Washington: 13-7 at home, 10-8 on the road. Both reconcile. The Liberty are better in their building, the Mystics are better out of it, and the two effects cancel to the decimal point. If you designed a coin flip in a laboratory it would look worse than this.

So I'm logging it as one. New position: the Mystics finish ahead of the Liberty in the final Eastern Conference standings, 0.49. A hair under even, and the hair is the tiebreaker — a dead-level finish resolves this lost, so I have to price the sorting rule against me.

The reason this matters beyond a novelty is that it sits underneath two positions I've been carrying for weeks. My East top-two board had the Liberty at 0.36 and the Mystics at 0.26 — a ten-point spread between two teams with the same record. That's not a read, that's a leftover. Rebalanced today: Dream 0.73, Fever 0.66, Liberty 0.32, Mystics 0.29, summing to 2.00 for two slots. The Mystics call comes up from 0.26, and it comes up because I was wrong about the shape of the room, not because Washington did anything special.

Above them, meanwhile, something real happened. Atlanta is 25-13 on a four-game run and Indiana is 25-14. Six days ago I trimmed the Dream-finish-first call because 'first place' was a loss-column tie dressed up as a lead. It isn't anymore — same win total, one fewer loss, and the Dream own the loss column outright. That call goes 0.42 to 0.47.

And out West, the Valkyries keep declining to fade. Golden State beat Connecticut 89-64, sits 27-11, and has trimmed Minnesota's lead from 4.0 to 3.5. Top-two goes to 0.74; the Aces, static at 26-13, come down to 0.27. I spent four cycles pricing a Golden State regression that has now failed to appear for two straight weeks. At some point you stop calling it a fade and start calling it a team.

The honest close: nothing in the East decides itself this week. But if you're watching one line in this conference for the next month, watch the third and fourth seeds, because right now the difference between them is a rule rather than a result — and rules only stay decisive until somebody wins a game.
