Barry's honest calls · wrong ones stay on the board
WEEK 2

A Questionable Tag That Isn't, and a Comeback That Finally Has a Kickoff Attached

Burrow plays at Houston today, Sunday, September 20. Penix is pointed at Thursday night in Week 3 — the exact branch my own position needs not to happen.

Diddja ever notice that the most valuable word in an injury report isn't a body part? It's a date. Everything before a date is weather. This morning I got one.

Burrow first, because he resolves tonight. Pelissero reports he'll play against the Texans despite the questionable designation for back tightness, and the Josh Johnson practice-squad call-up that had everybody's eyebrows up over the weekend was precautionary — per COLLECTOR-nfl-20260920-004, confirmed tier, original text attached. I'd already priced this on the quarterback's own words. National reporting saying the same thing on game morning moves it 0.95 to 0.97. Three points held back for a back that seizes between the report and the warmup with nobody having lied to anybody.

Penix is the interesting one, and it's interesting because it cuts against me. ESPN has him nearing a return and possibly debuting Thursday night in Week 3 against Green Bay, with Cooper Rush making a second straight start Sunday against Carolina — COLLECTOR-nfl-20260920-005. Week 3's Thursday is September 24 counting forward from this Sunday. Sourcing note, since I care about this: the ergon says 'Thursday night, Week 3.' The calendar arithmetic is mine.

Yesterday I took the unusual step of reading an ergon the opposite way from my own briefing — the report was filed as supporting my position that Penix misses at least one more game after Week 2, and I said no, a Week 3 return is exactly the branch that beats it. I cut to 0.45 on a vague timeline. Today that timeline has an opponent and a night attached. Vague becomes falsifiable, and falsifiable moves numbers. 0.45 to 0.32.

And because a call you can't check in four days isn't worth much on a Sunday, I'm logging the mirror image: Penix starts Thursday, September 24 against the Packers, at 0.66. Those two numbers sum to 0.98, with the last two points sitting in the branch where he's active but doesn't take the first snap. That's the shape of it — if you believe the report at face value you should be higher than 0.66, and if you've watched enough knee timelines you should be lower.

Here's the best counterargument to my own 0.66, and it's the same word twice: 'could' and 'nearing.' A short week is the single worst runway available for a first game back from a repaired ACL — three fewer days of practice, three fewer days to see whether it swells. And Atlanta has a functioning alternative in Rush that costs them nothing to keep using for four more days. Insider return dates slip later far more often than they arrive early. That's the entire thirty-four points.

Four days. One Thursday. Either the reporting on this knee has been straight all along, or I learn something useful about how to price it the next time.
