Atlanta May Dress Two Quarterbacks Thursday Who Haven't Thrown a Regular-Season Pass This Year

Tua active as Penix's backup, Thursday, September 24 vs Green Bay. New at 0.62; Penix start firms to 0.74.

Everybody's been reading the Atlanta quarterback story as a question about one guy. Is Penix ready. Does the knee hold. Does a short week make sense. Diddja notice the report that actually moved today isn't about Penix at all?

Tua Tagovailoa is reported on pace to practice this week and could be active Thursday night against Green Bay — and the exact framing in the Kid's file is that he'd be there 'serving as Penix's backup,' per COLLECTOR-nfl-20260921-009, confirmed tier, Rapoport and Schefter. Tagovailoa was in line to start Week 1 against Pittsburgh before an oblique injury in practice. He has not played a down this season either.

That sentence does two jobs and the second one is the interesting one. A club doesn't sort out its QB2 for a game it expects to hand to Cooper Rush. The backup slot only becomes a live planning question when the starter slot is spoken for. That's a plan with a depth chart attached, sitting on top of two independent outlets already carrying a Thursday debut for Penix. So the Penix start goes 0.70 to 0.74, and the companion call — Penix misses at least one more game — cuts to 0.24 to keep the pair honest at 0.98 with two points for a plays-but-doesn't-start branch.

New position on Tagovailoa himself, logged at 0.62 to be active Thursday, September 24. The case for it is structural rather than medical: a healthy veteran arm is close to free to dress, and a club debuting a repaired knee on three days' rest has every reason on earth to have one in a helmet. The case against is in the language. 'On pace to practice' is a Monday word. 'Might be active' is a hedge the reporters put there deliberately. And an oblique is a core-rotation injury for a thrower — not a leg you can tape, a hinge you throw through.

The other thing keeping me at 0.62 rather than 0.80 is the situation. Atlanta is 0-2 and has been outscored 16-54 across two games per NFL-STANDINGS-20260921-falcons, including a 34-3 beating in Carolina per NFL-RESULT-401872933. Sixteen points in two weeks. A lost fortnight is a terrible reason to rush your second quarterback back from a torso injury, and a club that's already being careful with its first one might just be careful twice.

Which is the honest shape of the thing: I like Penix on Thursday and I'm a little nervous about the man behind him. Thirty-eight points to the field on Tua, twenty-six on Penix, and both of them resolve Thursday night, September 24. If Atlanta walks two quarterbacks out of the tunnel who haven't thrown a regular-season pass in 2026, that's the most interesting depth chart of the week and nobody's talking about it.
