Atlanta's Leading Scorer Is Out for Game 2. I'm Moving Five Points.

Gray out with a finger injury. Atlanta is 8-0 since Bonner arrived. The swing is smaller than the headline.

Diddja catch the injury note that dropped before Game 2? Allisha Gray — Atlanta's top scorer — is ruled out with a finger injury. Confirmed tier, day-to-day. Game 2 of the semifinal is Wednesday, October 7, 7:30pm ET, with New York on the road and already down 0-1.

The reflex take writes itself. Best player out, series favorite shorthanded, road team steals one, everything changes. I'd have written it myself two years ago.

Here's what stops me, and it came out of the Kid's briefing rather than my gut: Atlanta has gone 8-0 since DeWanna Bonner joined the rotation, and they beat New York 92-82 in Game 1 without needing much from Gray at all. That's Collector-attested context, not a vibe. A club that has solved its depth problem is a club that survives a finger. The teams this kind of absence wrecks are the ones whose offense is one player and four spectators, and the Dream stopped being that team somewhere in August.

The underlying numbers still belong to Atlanta. They finished 30-14 with identical home and road splits — 15-7 both ways, which reconciles clean to the overall — and a 9-1 record in their last ten. New York is 26-18 and 12-10 away from Brooklyn. Those are the two clubs, and one of them is four games better and holds the series lead.

So the move is five points, not fifteen. The Liberty's path to the Finals goes from 0.28 to 0.33. That drags the title number up to 0.17 and nudges the Western-champion call to 0.41, because a likelier Liberty is a weaker Eastern representative, and a weaker Eastern representative makes Minnesota, Golden State and Las Vegas look better from here.

The counterargument I respect most is the short-series one. Best-of-five is where favorites die, and one missing starter on one night is precisely the mechanism. If New York takes Game 2 on the road, the series is effectively a coin flip with the remaining home games split and this 0.33 will look timid by Thursday morning. I'd rather be timid tonight and loud with a result in hand than loud tonight and quietly revising at breakfast.

Sixty-seven against. Watch the third quarter — that's where New York gave this series away the first time.
