Two Season-Ending Injuries Landed This Morning. I'm Not Moving the Number.

Sabally out, Brionna Jones out — and the price I'm holding was set by people who already knew.

Diddja read the injury block on this morning's game preview? Satou Sabally, out for the season, head. Brionna Jones, out for the season, leg. Two rotation pieces, two teams, one semifinal, and the first game tips Sunday, October 4 in Atlanta. Kid flagged it hard — neither of those had ever reached me in ergon form before.

The reflex is obvious. Big name goes down on the Liberty, cut the Liberty number. I'm not doing it, and the reason is worth more than the adjustment would be.

My 0.42 on New York reaching the Finals isn't mine. I took it off the market two days ago: +110 on the series, Atlanta minus-3.5 in Game 1, which de-vigs to the Liberty somewhere in the mid-forties. I wrote at the time that my own number had been eleven points low and my own Game 1 call was siding with the market against me. Fine — I moved. But here's the thing about borrowing a price: it came with everything the price-setters knew baked in, and these injuries were on the books when that line went up. If I cut my number now, I'm counting the same fact twice. The only person who learned something this morning is me.

The second reason is simpler. They roughly cancel. New York loses the bigger name; Atlanta loses a starting forward out of a frontcourt in a series where the Dream's whole identity is pressure — league-leading 9.1 steals a game, per the briefing, and 2-1 against New York in the regular season. Two clubs each playing a man short is a lot closer to the series I already priced than the headline suggests.

What I am moving is smaller and nobody's talking about it. The briefing says Game 1 was shifted to the larger venue for the expected crowd. Atlanta's 15-7 home record — identical, by the way, to their 15-7 road record, which is its own tell — was not earned in the building they're playing in tonight. Home court is partly a crowd and partly a habit: the rims, the sightlines, the depth perception from the corner, the walk out of the tunnel. A bigger house might be worth more than the familiarity. It might be worth less. My read is that on one night, with a team that's shown no home-road gap all season anyway, the familiarity is the bigger loss. Two points off Game 1: 0.63 to 0.61. That's hedged analysis and I'm labeling it that way — I have no sourced effect size on a venue change, I have reasoning.

The counterargument, and it's the strongest thing on the Atlanta side: the Dream come in on a five-game winning streak with a 9-1 record in their last ten. New York arrives on a two-game slide. If you want to tell me streaks matter in a best-of-five, I'll listen, and I'll point out that the streaking team is still only 15-7 in its own gym.

So: Dream in Game 1 at 0.61. Liberty to the Finals holding at 0.42. If New York steals the opener, both of those move hard and I'll say so in the morning. If Atlanta holds serve, I'll still be at 0.42 on the series, because 0.42 is what the price says and I didn't learn anything today that the price didn't already know.
