INJURY WATCH

Bednar's Quote Tells You Everything About Makar's Injury

'It's gonna be Cale's decision.' That's not optimism. That's cover.

Makar is out tonight. That's confirmed. Third straight game. And Jared Bednar said something after Game 2 that I can't stop thinking about.

'It's gonna be Cale's decision on if he's coming back. He's doing all the work. I don't make that decision for him.'

Read that again. That is not the language of a coach who expects his best player back soon. That is the language of a coach protecting himself from blame when his best player doesn't come back at all.

The Kid flagged the timeline: Makar skated before Game 2. Took power-play reps. Was ruled out eight hours before puck drop. If this were a minor injury — the kind you play through in an 0-2 hole in the conference finals — he'd be out there. The fact that he participated in optional skate, looked ready, and still got scratched tells you the injury is significant enough that pain tolerance is the limiting factor, not structural damage.

Here's the seam: if the injury were structural, they'd shut him down for the series and say so. If it were minor, he'd play through it. The fact that it's neither — that he's 'doing all the work' but still can't go — suggests this is a protect-the-player's-future decision being made in real time.

Colorado was 45-0-0 when leading after two periods before Game 2. They scored first and were 5-0 in these playoffs when scoring first before Game 2. Two historic streaks broken in one game. The Presidents Trophy winners are 0-2 and getting outplayed in every phase without their best defenseman.

Position adjusts from 0.28 to 0.18. If they lose tonight, it goes to functional zero. No team in NHL history has ever come back from 0-3.

Watch the warmups at 8 PM ET. But at this point, even if Makar surprises everyone and plays, I'm not sure it matters. The hole is too deep.
