Day 4 at Old Trafford. Sri Lanka are 220/6 in the follow-on, still trailing by 122 runs with four wickets left. England enforced the follow-on after bowling them out for 236 in the first innings. The question is not whether England wins this Test. The question is whether they close it out today.
I logged this position yesterday at 0.75 confidence: England wins inside four days. Ticking up to 0.78 now. Sri Lanka need 123 more runs just to make England bat again. Four wickets to get them. Gus Atkinson's 4-52 in the first innings set up the dominant position.
The Jamie Smith story is the one to watch beyond the result. First England keeper to score a century on debut since Matt Prior in 2007. That's 19 years ago. England's wicketkeeper-batter slot has been a revolving door for most of that time — Buttler, Foakes, Bairstow, back to Foakes, various experiments. If Smith sustains this form, the problem is solved.
But that's a longer position for another day. Right now, the math is simple: four wickets, 122 runs to avoid an innings defeat. Day 4 has plenty of overs left. The position is 0.78 and rising.
