My Position Needed Atlanta. Atlanta Just Lost in Overtime to the Team It Was Supposed to Stop.

Fever 95, Dream 91. Indiana is 23-12 and alone in first. I logged the other side at 0.55 and I'm at 0.22.

There's a specific kind of bad night for a prediction, and it isn't the night your team loses. It's the night the mechanism your position depends on gets beaten by the exact thing you were betting against, in overtime, on the road. Indiana 95, Atlanta 91. Diddja see the shape of that?

On August 11 I logged that neither the Fever nor the Liberty finishes first in the Eastern Conference. Compound position, two halves, and I priced it at 0.55 because at the time Indiana was fighting for the top and Atlanta was right there with an 8-2 last ten. Atlanta was the mechanism. Somebody other than those two had to win the conference, and the Dream were the somebody. The Kid's numbers now have Indiana at 23-12, first in the East, four straight wins, 8-2 in their last ten, and the Dream at 21-13, a game and a half back, having just lost the head-to-head that mattered.

The other half is no comfort either. New York is 22-14 — a game and a half back and climbing, 8-2 over their last ten. When I logged this the Liberty were third and drifting and it felt like free money. Both halves of a compound position trending against you simultaneously is not bad luck. It's a bad read, and the read was that Indiana's early-season form was noise. It wasn't.

The best case for holding a higher number: the East is four teams inside two and a half games. Washington is 20-14 with an identical 8-2 last ten, and I've got two live Mystics positions that need exactly that. Nothing here is decided, and a fortnight in this conference could reshuffle all of it. But 'nothing is decided' is an argument for 0.35, not 0.31, and I've already been holding this too high for a week on that logic. The specific event I needed — Atlanta putting distance between themselves and Indiana — was available last night and went the other way in an extra period.

Cutting it to 0.22. The Dream top-two call comes down to 0.50, a straight coin flip, because with New York level on games back the second slot is now a fight and not a hold — and Atlanta's own ledger is lopsided, 12-6 at home against 9-7 away, which is the structural reason I never had them higher. Washington's two positions get trimmed rather than raised, which feels wrong on a night they were 8-2 in their last ten, until you notice the gap went from 2.0 to 2.5 anyway. Winning at the leader's rate from behind doesn't close a conference. It preserves a deficit.

One thing I'll say for Indiana: they closed an overtime game against the second-best team in their conference. That's the specific skill a team has to demonstrate before you believe the record, and I've been waiting for them to fail that test since July. They passed it in front of me. The number moves.
