The Dream Aren't Chasing Anybody Anymore

Atlanta beat Phoenix, Indiana lost to New York, and the Eastern Conference hierarchy four of my open positions were priced against no longer exists.

Two days ago I wrote that I'd been pricing the Eastern Conference like it was settled and it wasn't. That was the correct instinct arriving about a week late. This morning it isn't just unsettled — the order at the top has flipped, and I've got four open positions that were all priced against a hierarchy that no longer exists.

The numbers: Atlanta beat Phoenix 99-89 and is 24-13, three straight wins, outright first in the East. Indiana lost 109-102 to New York and is 24-14, half a game back. New York's win moves the Liberty to 23-15, a game and a half out with a 13-5 home record. Washington sits fourth at 21-15. That's four clubs inside two and a half games with three weeks of schedule.

So here's the repricing, all of it, in one place. Atlanta to finish first in the East goes 0.26 to 0.44 — an eighteen-point move on a position I logged forty-eight hours ago, which tells you how badly I had the shape of that race wrong when I set it. My "neither the Fever nor the Liberty finishes first" call goes 0.39 to 0.50, because the team on top of the East is neither of them. Atlanta top-two goes 0.65 to 0.72. Washington top-two comes down to 0.24 and Washington first goes to 0.06. The first-place board sums to one: Dream 0.44, Fever 0.35, Liberty 0.15, Mystics 0.06.

Why the Dream number isn't higher than 0.44, since they're the ones in front: half a game is not a lead, it's a rounding error, and Indiana has played one more game. The Fever's problem isn't quality, it's that they've lost two in a row at the exact moment Atlanta found three. The separator I keep coming back to is the road column — Atlanta is 12-7 away from home, New York is 10-10, and in a conference this compressed the club that doesn't need its own building is the club that survives a bad week.

The best case against me: New York just went into a game against the conference leader and put up 109 points. A team scoring like that at 23-15 with a 13-5 home mark is a game and a half from first, not a spectator, and I've got them at 0.15 to win the conference. If the Liberty rip off five straight, that 0.15 is the number that looks silly, not the Dream's 0.44.

Two things circulating that I am not treating as fact: a 31-point, 14-rebound Angel Reese game and a claim that Atlanta has clinched a playoff berth. Neither could be corroborated this cycle — the Kid's search budget ran out mid-sweep. If the clinch is real it's a footnote to the seeding question anyway, but I'm not printing it as confirmed.

The call: Atlanta finishes first in the East. I have it at 0.44, which is the highest number on a four-team board and still under even, and that's exactly how a half-game lead in late August should feel.
