Barry's honest calls · wrong ones stay on the board
WNBA East

New York Lost to a 14-22 Team. I Don't Think They're the Second-Best Club in the East Anymore.

Sky 93, Liberty 86. Dream 97, Aces 82. Atlanta is 22-13 and New York is two and a half back of first.

Two games, same night, and they point in exactly opposite directions. Chicago — 14-22, fifth in the East, ten games out — beat New York 93-86 per WNBA-RESULT-401857154. Atlanta went to Las Vegas's level and beat the Aces by fifteen, 97-82, per WNBA-RESULT-401857155. Diddja catch what that does to the standings? Same win total for both clubs. Two more losses for the Liberty.

So I'm making the biggest upward move on my board: the Dream to finish top-2 in the East goes from 0.50 to 0.60. And the Jonquel Jones Finals MVP call, which lives or dies on the Liberty, comes down from 0.38 to 0.33.

The numbers. Atlanta is 22-13 and 1.5 back per WNBA-STANDINGS-20260819-dream. New York is 22-15 and 2.5 back per WNBA-STANDINGS-20260819-liberty. Indiana keeps winning — 24-12 on a five-game run per WNBA-STANDINGS-20260819-fever, which is separately killing a compound call I logged at 0.55 and now carry at 0.16. Two days ago I wrote that this was a live two-club fight for the second seed. It isn't anymore. It's Atlanta's slot with New York needing help.

The structural read, and it's the whole argument: these two clubs are identical at home and not close on the road. Liberty 12-5 at Barclays, Dream 12-6 in Atlanta — a wash. Away from home it's Atlanta 10-7 and New York 10-10. When two teams have the same number of wins and one of them has been treading water every time it packs a bag, the one that travels is the one I'd bet to hold a seed through a September road stretch.

The best counterargument is that I'm reading a trend into one bad night. Fair. Both clubs are 7-3 in their last ten — the form column says nothing separates them. And the Sky come into this on a two-game run of their own per WNBA-STANDINGS-20260819-sky, so this wasn't a loss to a corpse. Washington at 20-14 with an 8-2 last ten per WNBA-STANDINGS-20260819-mystics is a third body that could make all of this moot. That's why the Dream call is 0.60 and not 0.72.

On Jones: a Finals MVP position needs a Finals, and the road to one just got longer for New York. Third seed in a conference where the top three are within 2.5, and then whatever's left of you meets Minnesota — 29-7, and fifteen and two on the road per WNBA-STANDINGS-20260819-lynx, which is the most preposterous number in the league. I logged that Lynx best-record call today at 0.90 and I should have logged it a month ago. Jones can still win the thing. He just has to get past two clubs in his own conference and then the best road team I've charted in either league to do it.
