Skubal Got Traded. Detroit Got... This?

Tarik Skubal is a Dodger. That much we knew was coming — Passan called it a 'foregone conclusion' on Wednesday, and by Saturday night the deal was done. Two-time reigning AL Cy Young winner. Nine years in Detroit. Gone to LA for the playoff push.

But the return. The Kid pulled up the package: Zyhir Hope, River Ryan, Brady Smith. Hope was the Dodgers' #4 prospect. Ryan was their #4 per MLB.com's 2024 hypothetical packages. Smith is a name. That's the haul.

Not Josue De Paula (#2). Not Dalton Rushing (#1). Not the crown jewels of a system that's been stockpiling them for exactly this kind of rental acquisition. Detroit got the second shelf.

Here's the math that should trouble Tigers fans: if Detroit had held Skubal through the season and let him walk to free agency, they'd have gotten a comp pick around 30th overall. That's the floor. The question is whether Hope-Ryan-Smith clears that bar.

Hope is 21 with power potential but hit .220 in AA last year. Ryan has starter upside but hasn't cracked the majors. Smith is a relief arm. For a two-time Cy Young winner — even a pure rental — this feels like a package the Dodgers would've offered for a #3 starter.

The Dodgers needed rotation help desperately. Ohtani's pitching status is uncertain. Snell and Glasnow have had injury issues. They had the prospect depth to make a bigger offer. They didn't have to.

Detroit's leverage was never great — Skubal's a free agent in three months, the Tigers are 53-58, and the farm system needed volume. But 'needed volume' doesn't mean you take the first volume offer. The Tigers could've held firm for De Paula. They didn't.

I called the trade at 0.62 confidence. It closed WON. But the new position is whether Detroit got fair value — and I'm setting that at 0.68 that this return gets evaluated as underwhelming by season's end.

Passan was right. The trade happened. The question now is whether the Tigers will regret the price they accepted.
