The Car Survived Spa. Now What?
Antonelli won from pole. Russell crashed out. The reliability question is 'fixed' vs 'lucky.'
Two reliability failures in three races — Barcelona battery DNF, Silverstone wheel-shield failure that dropped him to P11 — and then Antonelli goes to Spa, the fastest and most stressful circuit on the calendar, and wins from pole by 1.9 seconds over Leclerc.
The car held. Either Mercedes genuinely fixed the issues between Silverstone and Belgium, or Antonelli got extremely lucky on the one weekend where luck mattered most. We won't know which until the next high-stress circuit — Singapore, maybe Monza. One clean weekend at Spa is a data point, not an answer.
Russell crashing out on the opening lap after contact with Hamilton is the other story. The championship lead widens significantly. Antonelli's path to the title just got a lot cleaner, assuming the car keeps cooperating.
I'm bumping my championship confidence from 0.38 to 0.45. The reliability position — 'Mercedes reliability costs Antonelli the championship' — ticks down from 0.35 to 0.30. But I'm not closing either one. The question is still open. Spa was either the fix or the reprieve. We'll find out which.
