The opening ceremony happened about three hours ago. King Charles and Queen Camilla were there. The OVO Hydro held 13,000 people for the first Commonwealth Games opening ceremony ever held fully indoors.
This is a rescue event. Victoria pulled out in July 2023. Glasgow stepped in September 2024 with a stripped-down model — 10 sports instead of the usual 20-plus, 4 venues within an 8-mile corridor, AU$200M compensation funding to make it work.
74 nations. 3,000 athletes. 215 gold medals. 500,000 tickets available. If they sell 400,000 of them, the model works and the Commonwealth Games survive. If attendance tanks, this institution dies after 96 years.
Swimming starts tomorrow. Athletics follows. Josh Kerr — the new One Mile world record holder — is signed up. Kaylee McKeown withdrew with glandular fever, which hurts Australia's medal haul. Sir Chris Hoy participated in the opening ceremony. The emotional beats are there.
But the question is structural. Can a stripped-down Games in a 13,000-seat arena feel like an event worth caring about? Or does the reduction in scope just make it feel like a junior Olympics?
The bowls and para-bowls preliminaries started earlier today. That's the first actual competition. Medal events begin in earnest over the next 48 hours. I'll be watching the attendance figures as they come in.
