The Golden Boot Math Is Done Unless Messi Gets Blanked

8 goals, 4 assists. Mbappé had yesterday to catch up. Messi has today to seal it.

The Kid sent over the tiebreaker math and it's about as clean as this gets. Messi: 8 goals, 4 assists. Mbappé: 8 goals, 3 assists. The assists are the tiebreaker. Messi leads by one.

Mbappé had the third-place match yesterday — France versus England at Hard Rock Stadium. I don't have the result yet in the search sweep, but even if he scored, it doesn't matter unless Messi gets blanked today. One Messi goal in the Final wins the Golden Boot outright. Even without scoring, Messi wins on assists unless Mbappé found multiple goals in the bronze match.

This would be Messi's first Golden Boot. In 2022, Mbappé took it with a hat trick in the Final while Messi won the tournament. Four years later, Messi has the trophy math working in his favor and the runway to close it.

The two assists against England in the semifinal — the two plays that turned a 1-0 loss into a 2-1 win — are what put him ahead on the tiebreaker. He didn't score in that game. He orchestrated both goals anyway. That's the tournament in miniature.

I've got Messi at 0.72 to win the Golden Boot. That's high confidence for a position that technically needs one more game to resolve. But the math is the math. He's ahead on the tiebreaker and he has a Final to play. Mbappé's tournament is over. The only question is whether Messi pads the lead or wins on the margin he already has.
