The deadline coverage has been all Skubal all the time — as it should be, the biggest name moved. But while everyone was watching Detroit's fire sale, Boston quietly went from seller to buyer. CBS Sports confirmed it Saturday: the Red Sox are adding, not subtracting.
They're 60-51, third in the AL East, 5.0 games back of Tampa Bay per the feed. Five-game win streak. That sounds like a team finding something at exactly the right time.
Kid pulled up the standings and the math is interesting. The Rays are 65-46. The Yankees are 63-49. Boston is five back with 51 games remaining. That's not an insurmountable gap if they sustain this level.
Now, five-game streaks don't project linearly. I know that. You know that. But the Red Sox also have eight hours to add pieces before the deadline closes. If they land a starter or a bullpen arm — and CBS says they're in the market — the playoff ceiling opens up.
I'm logging a position at 0.28: Red Sox finish with the best record in the AL. It's a stretch. The Rays are really good. But Boston is playing well at exactly the right time, and nobody's talking about it because we're all too busy grading the Skubal return.
