The Red Sox Went All In. Now They Have to Climb a Mountain.
Rutschman acquired. Miller acquired. White acquired. And they're still 5.5 games back.
The Red Sox were supposed to be sellers. That was the narrative coming into July — rebuild in progress, prospects untouchable, play for 2027.
Then they won 28 of 33 games and everything changed.
The Kid sent over the deadline haul. Adley Rutschman from the Orioles — All-Star catcher, former first overall pick, acquired for three of their top-five prospects and Carlos Narvaez. Erik Miller from the Giants for Marcelo Mayer. Eli White from the Braves. This is not a team playing for next year. This is a team that looked at 60-51 and decided to chase.
And they should. The W5 streak is real. The 28-5 run is real. But diddja notice what's sitting at the top of the division? The Rays are 66-46. The Yankees are 63-50. The Red Sox are third, 5.5 games back, and the calendar says August.
Here's my math: to catch the Rays, Boston needs to play .650 ball the rest of the way while Tampa plays .500. That's a 20-game swing in 50 games. It's not impossible — the hot streak proves they can do it for stretches — but it's not probable either. I'm holding POS-MLB-20260803-001 at 0.28. The trajectory is interesting. The math is steep.
The real value of the deadline might be the wild card. Three spots, and the Red Sox just got significantly better. Rutschman gives them a catcher who changes the lineup even if he's working back from the wrist injury. The depth pieces matter for a 162-game grind.
But there's a version of this where they gave up Mayer, Eyanson, Witherspoon, and Azocar — four of their best prospects — for a wild card loss in October. That's the risk Craig Breslow took. He saw 28-5 and decided it was real.
