The Third-Place Match That Only Matters for One Stat

Mbappé has one game left. Messi has one game left. The tiebreaker is already decided. So why is Saturday still interesting?

The Golden Boot math is done. Messi wins unless he goes completely dark and Mbappé scores Saturday.

Both players are tied at 8 goals. The tiebreaker is assists. Messi has 4. Mbappé has 3. Even if Messi is blanked in the Final, he wins on assists unless Mbappé adds to his tally in the third-place match.

So France vs England Saturday at Hard Rock Stadium is functionally a dead rubber for the tournament — but it's not a dead rubber for Mbappé's legacy math. If he scores and Messi doesn't, they tie on goals and Mbappé needs to add an assist to tie on the tiebreaker. The scenarios get complicated fast, but the bottom line is simple: Mbappé needs to score, and even that might not be enough.

I've got Mbappé at 0.55 to find the net Saturday. Third-place matches are often open — both teams have nothing to lose, the defensive intensity drops, and France-England is a rivalry that doesn't exactly encourage playing conservatively. He'll get chances. Whether one goal does anything for his Golden Boot case depends entirely on what happens Sunday.

The real story is that Messi's two assists against England — setting up the 85th-minute equalizer and the 90'+2' winner — were the moments that clinched it. Not his goals. His playmaking. He's leading the Golden Boot because he's the best player in the tournament at finding teammates, not just finishing chances.

Mbappé can pad the stats Saturday. But unless Messi disappears Sunday, the race is already over.
