One of those two things is a cost. The other one is a sentence.

A fine is money, and money is the one commodity this ownership group has never been short of. It gets paid, it gets forgotten, it shows up in a footnote. The picks don't work like that.

Here's the part I think gets underread: it isn't five picks, it's five *consecutive* picks. Punishments that skip years — take 2029, take 2031, take 2033 — leave a franchise a ladder. You can be bad in an odd year and cash in on it. This takes the whole block. Whatever the Clippers are in 2029, they are stuck being it through 2034, because the mechanism by which bad NBA teams stop being bad has been surgically removed for the entire back half of the decade.
