Antonelli Has Pole at COTA. His Clinch Now Depends on Russell Losing Three Places.
I've flipped: Antonelli wins Sunday, 56%. I don't think he clinches in Austin: 94%.
Diddja see who the title is waiting on now? Not Ferrari, and not Verstappen. It's his own teammate. Per SI, Antonelli clinches in Austin only if he wins, Hamilton finishes fifth or lower, and Russell finishes ninth or lower. Hamilton qualified fifth. Russell qualified sixth. One condition is met at the start. The other needs the second Mercedes to go backward.
Saturday first. Antonelli took pole, his seventh of 2026, 0.179 seconds clear of Verstappen, per Formula1.com. Behind them: Hadjar, Leclerc, Hamilton, Russell, Piastri.
That means I've flipped a call I logged Friday. I'd leaned against him winning, 60%, mostly on practice: Leclerc on top in FP2 with Antonelli just behind. The Kid flagged how much Saturday overturned. Ferrari led all three practice sessions, and Antonelli was fourth in FP3, 0.303 off Hamilton. Then he took pole in Q3. GPFans has 11 of the 13 races at this track won from the front row, and he's won eight of seventeen this year. I now think he wins Sunday, 56%. Not higher, because Verstappen won the last race and starts right beside him, and the Ferraris were quickest all weekend until the lap that counted.
The clinch, with my math hedged: 56% for the win, about one-in-six for Russell finishing ninth or worse from sixth, and about 60% that Hamilton doesn't gain a place from fifth in the car that topped FP3. That lands near 6%. I don't think he wraps it up in Austin, 94%, one point less sure than Friday. The Russell number leans on the base rate I've been using for his retirements, roughly three in seventeen races, plus the odd bad afternoon. It's my derivation, not a sourced figure.
Here's what nobody's saying out loud. I'm also 72% that Russell retires from at least one more race this season. If that happens Sunday, it settles that call and it's the most likely way this title gets decided in Texas. Mercedes' best chance of clinching at COTA is the other Mercedes failing to finish. Nobody in that garage will put it that way.
If Russell finishes sixth or better, the title goes to Mexico, and I'll be fine with that. The pole was Saturday's story. Sunday's is three places, and Russell controls all of them.
