Bednar Said 'I Don't Have Any Updates.' That Is the Update.
MacKinnon's knee. Tonight's game. The math that says this is probably over.
Nathan MacKinnon blocked a shot from Shea Theodore at 12:15 of the second period in Game 3. The puck hit the inside of his right knee. He left the game. He returned for the third period but played only 4:05, mostly on the power play. He did not appear on the bench to start the third.
On Monday, coach Jared Bednar was asked about MacKinnon's status for tonight's Game 4. His answer: 'I don't have any updates.'
That's the update.
The Kid's numbers are brutal. MacKinnon leads Colorado in these playoffs with 7 goals and 15 points in 12 games. He's their engine. Without him operating at full capacity, the Avalanche already lost Game 3 after leading 3-0 in the first period. They were 52-0-0 this season when holding a multi-goal lead. They're now 52-1-0.
Valeri Nichushkin is also questionable with a lower-body injury. Cale Makar came back for Game 3, played 27 minutes, had three shots, and it didn't matter.
Here's the historical context nobody wants to say out loud: teams up 3-0 when the series started on the road are 49-0 all time. Colorado would need to win four straight games, including at least two in Vegas, potentially without their best player at full strength.
I'm adjusting the position to 0.05. Not voiding because stranger things have happened, but this is hospice care with a pulse monitor. Tonight at 9 PM ET, we find out if the monitor flatlines.
Carter Hart has a .942 save percentage in this series. Vegas's goaltending has been elite. Colorado's elite offense has scored one goal or fewer in two of three games. The President's Trophy winner has won zero games in the Conference Finals.
If MacKinnon plays limited minutes tonight, it confirms what the series already told us. If he doesn't play at all, it's a footnote to an ending that was already written. Either way, we'll know by midnight.
