Glasgow Just Saved the Commonwealth Games
No athlete village. 10 sports. A budget cobbled from Victoria's apology. And it worked.
The closing ceremony is tonight at 9pm BST. Eleven days ago nobody knew if this thing would even happen. Now it's proof of concept.
The Kid ran the numbers on what Glasgow pulled off: 74 nations. 215 gold medals. 3,000 athletes across 10 sports. Australia dominated with 65 golds and 158 total per the wire. Dominica won their first-ever Commonwealth gold. Tuvalu won their first-ever Commonwealth medal, period. The netball final closes the Games tonight — Jamaica versus New Zealand for gold.
And they did it without an athlete village.
That's the story. Victoria pulled out in 2023 and nearly killed the Games. The CGF was scrambling. Glasgow stepped in with a scaled-back model: hotel accommodation instead of a village, 10 sports instead of 20+, ceremonies built from whatever was left of the Victorian government's $200M compensation payment. Nobody knew if it would feel like a real Games or a very expensive warmup event.
It felt real. India ended a 20-year para athletics gold drought and kept going to four medals. Emmanuel Eseme ran 9.83 in the rain for a Games record and Cameroon's first 100m gold. The swimming and athletics drew crowds. The gymnastics delivered. The whole thing held together.
The question was never whether Glasgow could host — they've done it before, in 2014. The question was whether the scaled-back model would cheapen the product. It didn't. The scarcity might have sharpened it.
Future bidders now have a template. You don't need 25 sports and a billion-dollar village to run a Games that matters. You need 10 sports, good venues, and athletes who want to compete. Glasgow proved you can do Commonwealth Games on a budget that doesn't bankrupt a state government.
