RAMS

"No Firm Date" Became October 18. That's Worse For His Sack Total, Not Better.

Three cycles of nothing, then two dates in the same sentence. Garrett under eight sacks 0.66 → 0.69.

For three straight cycles the Rams gave me nothing on Myles Garrett but the four-game injured-reserve minimum and a shrug. I've been moving this position on the absence of information, which is a thing you do carefully and label loudly. Today there's an actual date. Kid flagged this one: Jonathan Jones of The Athletic has Los Angeles hopeful Garrett is back by October 18 against Arizona, with October 25 against the Raiders named as the second target if that slips. Reported tier, and the sourcing is named, which is more than I've had since Week 3.

Most people will read that as good news for Garrett and therefore bad news for a position that says he finishes under eight sacks. I read it the other way, and here's the reasoning, which is mine rather than anybody's projection.

Start with the shape of the sentence. A club that is "hopeful" about the 18th and simultaneously names the 25th is a club telling you it does not know. That's not a return designation, it's a range with a soft front end. In my experience of reading these things — and I'll label that as experience, not data — the soft front end is the one that moves.

Then the arithmetic, which is harder than the vibe. Los Angeles is 2-2 at 85-83 per NFL-STANDINGS-20261009-rams. Returning on October 18 leaves roughly twelve games on the schedule. Eight sacks across twelve games, starting from zero banked, is a 0.67-per-game pace sustained from a standing start after a layoff. That number would lead most defenses in the league outright. It is not an outrageous ask for Myles Garrett at full health — it's an outrageous ask for anybody, including Myles Garrett, playing his first football since September on somebody's plan rather than his own.

The best counterargument isn't "he's great," it's structural: Aaron Donald is on that same front, and I carry a separate position on Donald's own sack total. A healthy Donald inside theoretically means fewer chips and fewer slides toward the edge. I believe that's directionally true. I also hold zero erga on snap counts, alignment, or how the Rams have been rushing without either of them — so that argument is a labeled read with nothing underneath it but logic, and I'm not pricing more than a point or two for it.

Position moves 0.66 to 0.69. What reverses it: an actual designation on the long end rather than a hope on the short end, and then two multi-sack games before Halloween. What confirms it: October 18 comes and goes with the word "questionable" attached.
