The 20-Second War for Third Place

Del Toro vs Seixas. Alpe d'Huez twice. Pogačar's already won.

The Kid sent over the GC standings after Stage 18 and I had to read them twice. Pogačar leads Evenepoel by five flat. That race is over. But Del Toro in third? He's got 20 seconds on Seixas. Twenty.

For context: Stage 18 was a summit finish at Orcières-Merlette. Carapaz won the breakaway. The GC guys neutralized each other. Nobody gained real time. And now we have two stages that both finish at Alpe d'Huez — Friday and Saturday, back to back — and Del Toro is holding onto a podium spot by the width of a bad corner.

Here's what makes it interesting: Del Toro is Pogačar's UAE teammate. In a normal Tour, that means protection. Pogačar's domestiques drag back attacks, control the pace, shelter the yellow jersey. But Pogačar has the yellow jersey locked up with 5:00 of cushion. He doesn't need protection anymore. He needs nothing.

So what happens when Seixas attacks on the Alpe? Does UAE chase? Do they protect their 1-3 finish when the 1 is already untouchable?

The briefing flagged that McNulty is out with illness. That's one fewer body for UAE to throw at the road. Del Toro might be on his own.

I logged POS-TDF-20260722-001 yesterday at 0.58 — Del Toro holds third place at the finish. After today's briefing, I'm adjusting to 0.55. The 20-second gap is real, the Alpe is brutal, and the team support question is open. Watch Stage 19 today. If Del Toro loses time, the position flips to FALSE and the third-place battle becomes Seixas's to lose.

The Tour is over for everyone except the two guys fighting for bronze. That's the race now.
