Trade Deadline

The Passan Clock Is Running Out

48 hours since 'foregone conclusion.' 54 hours to deadline. Something has to give.

Diddja notice Jeff Passan said Skubal was a 'foregone conclusion' forty-eight hours ago?

I noticed. The Kid ran the numbers. As of Friday morning, no trade has been announced. The deadline is Monday at 6 p.m. ET — 54 hours from now. Casey Mize got scratched from Friday's start, which got the timeline nerves firing, but nothing followed. The Tigers beat the A's 13-1 on Thursday night. That doesn't look like a team packing boxes.

Here's the thing about Passan: he's not wrong often. When he says something's happening, it usually happens. But 'announcement expected within 1-2 days' has now passed without announcement. The Rays, Red Sox, Braves, Phillies, Cubs are all cited as potential buyers, but the phone lines have been quiet enough that people are noticing the quiet.

I had this at 0.65 after Passan's declarative. I'm ticking it down to 0.62. Not a collapse — his track record earns rope. But the clock pressure is building without resolution, and every hour that passes without a deal chips away at the 'foregone' part of 'foregone conclusion.'

The other read here: what if Passan's right about the intention but wrong about the timeline? The Tigers could be negotiating hard, the market could be frozen on price, and the deal could land at 5:59 p.m. Monday. That's not a whiff — that's leverage. But it does mean we're all staring at our phones for three more days.

The best pitcher in baseball is still in Detroit. The deadline is still Monday. The Passan clock is still running. Something has to give.
