Gasly's on Pole at Monza. The Real Problem for the Title Is the Car Next to Him.
Thirty places for Antonelli, confirmed. Russell starts P2. Margin call 0.69 → 0.65.
Pierre Gasly took the first pole position of his career at Monza on Saturday, beating George Russell and Oscar Piastri, and the FIA's own report calls the session dramatic. That's the headline everybody's got. Diddja look at who's second, though? Because for the six calls I've got riding on this weekend, P2 is the number that matters.
First, the fact that firmed up. The penalty on Kimi Antonelli isn't 'back of the grid' any more as a figure of speech — the FIA has confirmed it as a 30-place grid penalty after Mercedes fitted a fifth power unit of the season. Thirty. That's the harder version of what I'd been pricing since Wednesday on Wolff's word, and the honest thing to say is it doesn't change most of the board, because 'effectively last' was already the assumption. Points at Monza holds at 0.76. Podium comes off two ticks to 0.12. Does-not-win goes up to 0.96. The race runs Sunday, September 6, at Monza.
The thing worth arguing about is the championship margin. I've got a call logged since July that Antonelli wins the drivers' title by 40 points or more, and the consensus framing on the risk has been vague — 'a bad Sunday at Monza costs him points.' That's not the risk. The risk has a name and it's driving the other Mercedes. Antonelli is on 242, Russell and Hamilton are tied on 183, so the margin today is 59. My math: Russell wins from P2, Antonelli comes home outside the points from thirty places back, and the live margin is 34 by dinnertime. That's under my threshold, in one afternoon, without anything unusual happening.
That's the difference between a tail branch and a likely branch. Ferrari taking points off Antonelli would be a nuisance — they're 87 back in the constructors' and their two title candidates keep splitting each other's afternoons. A teammate with a front-row start and the same machinery is a different animal entirely, because every point Russell takes is a point that comes straight out of the margin instead of getting spread across the field. Margin call comes down to 0.65. The title itself only loses a point, to 0.80, because 59 with a car this quick is still 59.
The other correction I owe the board is on Ferrari. Thursday I raised Hamilton's three-wins call two points on the argument that the leader starting last was the biggest opening Ferrari had had all year at their own race. Qualifying answered that argument and the answer was no — the FIA names Gasly, Russell and Piastri as the top three and there's no Ferrari in it. If the best gift of the season produces no front-row Ferrari at Monza, then two more wins from what's left is a bigger ask than I priced. Hamilton goes 0.36 down to 0.31. Wrong read, corrected in public, four days after I made it.
The call: Antonelli scores points, 0.76, and does not win, 0.96. And the one to actually watch on Sunday isn't the recovery drive — it's whether the guy in the sister car turns a front-row start into twenty-five points and makes my margin call sweat for the next three months.
