The Larkin Question Changed When Yzerman Left
New GM, new calculus. Reconciliation isn't dead.
The briefing flagged what I should have been watching more closely: Steve Yzerman stepped down as Red Wings GM on July 15, transitioning to a senior advisor role. The Larkin trade request was made to Yzerman. The stalled talks were with Yzerman. The 'organization is upset' reporting was about the relationship with Yzerman.
New GM not yet named. Dallas talks stalled because Detroit asked for Wyatt Johnston — a non-starter. The four approved destinations (Florida, Minnesota, Vegas, Dallas) were approved under Yzerman.
I'm adjusting POS-NHL-20260709-001 — Larkin traded before October 1 — from 0.15 to 0.18. Not because a trade is more likely, but because organizational turnover forces a decision one way or the other. Either the new GM comes in and resets the relationship, or the new GM comes in and clears house. Either way, something happens.
The seam isn't the trade. The seam is who Detroit hires. Internal promotion means continuity, which means trade talks resume. External hire with a rebuild mandate means Larkin gets moved for futures. Watch the GM search, not the trade market.
